4 November 1942

Walt’s starting to think of all the plans needing to be accomplished before their marriage at Christmas, like getting a ring and witnesses, and securing a church.

A transcript follows the letter images.

I Love You

Nov. 4, 1942.

Hello Ruth,

How is my dearest one tonight? Still love me?—Sho!

I sent you a dozen roses (telegraph) Sunday—I see by your letter today you didn’t get them—They should have been there at four oclock in the afternoon. So—if you don’t know what I was talking about last night the other nite in my letter, that was it. I’m sorry you didn’t get them.

Fields and I were walking past a Floral Shop, so we got an I idea and followed it thru. Well—I had the idea anyway.—Ha. I Love You.

No Honey—I didn’t have anything (to) special to call you about—just tho’t I’d like to talk to you. Don’t “hang” near a phone tho thinking I will be calling because I probably won’t be near another one for quite sometime.

Now that you’ve told your mother and Twila can’t come I’m kind of relieved and I hope nobody had their feelings hurt—Whew!

So you would like to get married in a Church would you—well that is perfectly O.K. with me—I intended to be married by a preacher but I didn’t know whether it would be in a Church, a parsonage or where. Do couples get married all alone in a church all by their lonesome?—I dunno—I suppose they do—Say—come to think of it—you have to have witnesses don’t you—Oh me—I never tho’t of that—Oh me—I’m liable to get gray headed yet—Ha—What else do you have to do—Say—you’ld better give me some pointers—I know absolutely nothing about getting married aren’t you surprised at anyone as conceited as me admitting that there is something they don’t know how to do. Ha.

Say—I have to get a ring yet—wow—what do you like—Maybe wed we had better let you pick what you like—Unh?

And I don’t wouldn’t know what to do with it after (you) we get it.—Say—Now I’m beginning to worry.—and shake—Oh me!

I went for another motorcycle ride today—I had it up to 75 and was that baby going—on a dirt road to—Someday I’m really going to get one rolling when I get on a hard road—Maybe I’d better cut that out now, tho. We have a lot of work to do in the shop now—a lot of new vehicles to check, and some to “break in” I hope.” I’ll have some driving to do then. If I don’t get to driving soon I’ll be getting “rusty” and thats bad.

I’m kind of rusty at writing tonight am I not—I can’t get in the groove.

I have to shave and shower and go to bed soon—so—

I can sleep

so I can dream

so.—I’ll be with you—you’ll be there too.
