Ruth’s Letters

Most of Ruth’s letters were returned by Walt in bundles, as many as he could fit into an envelope. The last of those bundles, on 25-26 July, were sent in multiple envelopes. Four letters were still in their original envelopes from Ruth, so it’s unclear how those were returned to her.

It’s unclear why the letters stop in July, because I’m sure she wrote to him up to when she met him in Texas in December to be married. The last July letter does coincide with a visit by Ruth to Fort Riley, so maybe she collected all the letters at that time. Maybe Walt forgot to save the rest or they were lost in his move to Texas for flight training.

Still, this is a good collection for getting a sense of Ruth and her view of the relationship.

Ruth is 21 when writing these letters.
