Notice that the postmark is Dec. 25, giving an idea of how behind the mail is, so it will be long after Christmas before Ruth gets his wishes about a white one.
Walt is lonely now that his little band of four has broken up.
A transcript follows the letter images.
How are you?—Fine I hope.
At the present time I’m a little tired—Having been on a B-25 for 1600 mi.—Three of us Peelots are back down the line to pick up three new—beautiful little airplanes—If the weather and the timber hangs together will be home again tomorrow evening.—Be a pretty good hop.
What do you know—I’m in charge of the Flt.—I’d better lose some smugness or I’ll “Snafu” again.
To tell the truth I’m not very smug—The weather
[unnumbered page 2]
has been very bad and besides I have two irresponsible “characters” on my wing—not to mention irresponsible me.—
How is winter coming along?—I hope you have a lovely white winter and an especially a beautiful Christmas—You should have a white one this year.—Next year we won’t care whether it rains, snows or otherwise—(but it
would will be nice if it is white)
I feel lonely tonight Sweetheart—I don’t like the guys that came with me in the first place—
[unnumbered page 3]
Frank, Garner, Dubost and I were altogether before—Now Dubost and Garner are
at in the Hospital waiting to go home—Frank and I are left but we don’t even fly together any more—Well—That is the way it goes—You’ld think the way I’m writing that I’m lonely for their company—but it isn’t that—It’s for you—they merely helped to pass the time and were friends—No—I still think of you—a lot of the time—And always in the evening—I remember you the most—You’re quite a girl—quite a wife.
[unnumbered page 4]
You know I was always inclined to be a little reckless—but now—I still have the same inclination but I have to think of whose on my wing now and also I think a bit about you and then I double check again—It don’t hinder my flying don’t get me wrong—I just “check” again—Ha—
Guess who I saw last night? Remember H. Lynch who came back from Guadalcanal and was my instructor in advanced—I heard his name mentioned last evening and inquired about him—Lo and behold he was on the same Is. I was—So I went and looked

him up—He’s a Capt. now and a test Pilot for an outfit.—He expects to get into a P-51 Ftr. Sqd. and if he does he said he would try to get me in because they’ll want some “Hot Rocks”—Ha——I’m going to give him a slow roll off the deck when I go thru their tomorrow—Ha.—If I keep a good setup in this Sqd. I don’t know whether I’d want to leave it—If I Snafu—I would.—
Well—Take it easy Honey
Good Evening Sweetheart
I Love You
